Lana Del Rey – “Video Games”

Lips? Lips.

Church Bells. Faint chamber choir/wind. Harp. Piano. Strings. And then a voice that I did not expect.

Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” is haunting. I’ve tried to listen to other songs, and I have done so, and enjoyed them, but I can’t get this song out of the every-other-song-rotation the past week. I love it.

She is experimenting with her sound as her songs have a great range from the 50’s-jazzy-pop “Video Games” to the hip-hop influenced “Diet Mtn. Dew” and while they are very different they have a unifying factor that could lead to a great album one day.

Lana, formerly Lizzy Grant, is one of the most self aware young artists (without a full length record out) around. I’m not sure how to feel about it with such unfortunate comments like calling herself the “gangsta Nancy Sinatra,” and saying she wants her music to be “the sonic equivalent to a Vincent Gallo film.” What I do know is that I can’t stop listening. If you like “Video Games” then give “Yayo” a try. They are both below.

The official “Video Games” video.

And of course the Soundcloud.

 And Grooveshark for “Yayo.”
