Do you like powerful female vocals? Do you like old school sound? Do you like southern blues/soul-infused rock? Do you often wonder what the White Stripes would sound like if Jack White were a woman named Brittany Howard? Then you should probably stop reading this gibberish and start listening to the Alabama Shakes.
Okay, that last one about the White Stripes was a stretch but this band has the same power and southern-influenced raw sound that Jack White brings to his music. They also have the throwback sound of someone like Fitz & the Tantrums.
Formerly just The Shakes, they hail from Athens (Alabama…obviously) and are awesome. They just released a four song EP, which you can check out via Bandcamp below, as well as purchase for four dollars on that website. They have another song, “Hang Loose,” which I love but can’t find online anywhere because they seem to have taken down their Soundcloud profile. I wrote to check out “You Ain’t Alone,” but really…check all four out. You have the time. Don’t lie.
Anyway, message to readers: listen to Alabama Shakes immediately. Message to Alabama Shakes: Get more music online, stop opening for Drive By Truckers on the Alabama circuit and get out to LA. We want you.
